Replacing 8.8 drum with 8.8 disc from Explorer

the goal is to NOT lock up the tires, locked up tires don't stop a vehicle (hence the creation of antilock brakes), tires that decelerate in a controllable manner slow down a vehicle faster.

Stoping a car using only your ABS dosn't work it actually won't stop almost at all. my girlfriends cavalier ABS booster was going bad so when you first turned the car the ABS would kick on everytime you hit the brakes nomatter what the road conditons and with out the regular braking power behind them it wouldn't stop insted it'll jerk rapidly triing to stop and take 30 - 50 feet to stop at low speeds like 15 mph. So regular braking still requried to stop quickly.

I'm not saying ABS is the shiznit, I personally don't have anything that it is actually functioning on... I was just saying that locked up brakes aren't the fastest way to stop

personally, I'm running my D28 and 7.5 with stock brakes (9" drums in the rear) and 31" tires, on a fresh bleed job it stops pretty good, but after a couple (literally) hard stops the brake fluid in the calipers boils or something and it gets air in them, I gave up and live with the soft pedal, I'll deal with the real issue when I swap the D35 on that has bigger brakes to start with...

You are saying that ABS doesn't stop a vehicle, because your ABS system was malfunctioning? Uh, ABS is one of the better things that has happened in my opinion, now some of the systems are bad especially the older ones, but they have gotten extremely better.

No I'm saying the brakes won't stop the car when the ABS comes on when you don't need it. So basiclly yes it is not working properly but if the cars not sliding the car won't stop, when it comes on, on dry pavement.

All I'm gonna say is i love the security feeling I have now wheeling and actually stopping now that I've got a switch to turn on and off the ABS. Had a scare last year in the snow...damn thing kept on goin'....FUK ABS on anything but dry or wet pavement.

dude, My Wife's minivan has 4 Wheel anti-lock disc brakes and I will put up 5 bills that it stops quicker in snow and on ice than your pick up from any given speed. for that matter both my Full size pick ups have 4 wheel ABS and at least the 3/4 will stop almost as quick as the minivan, haven't driven the dually yet.

I can't say they will chirp the tires on dry pavement but I definitely hear the difference on dry pavement when they are working properly

Take that same 4whl ABS minivan down a gravel trail with a steep down grade.....I'll stop faster instead of foot to the floor going down a hill because ABS is FOR THE STREET!! My truck is 4whel ABS though it's not all disc all around(yet). My point was given in an off road situation, ABS is a pain, you need to stop you need to stop and ABS don't do well at all in gravel or snow. I had a scare last year....down a steep hill and no brakes(thank you ABS and a pedal going striaght to the floor), headed straight for a tree, let go of the brakes and hit the parking brake, hit the brakes again. I'm tellin you, having your tires lock up in an off road situation is what you want, it builds a mound in front of the tires which inturn stops you. And for what it's worth, on the street with snow, i stop sooner with my ABS turned off than when it's on...

no, you said "fuk abs on anything but dry and wet pavement" of course ABS sucks off road......... but I bet my minivan will still stop quicker and more controlled on a gravel road than a non-ABS equipped vehicle....... as for dirt, sand, and any other off road conditions then I agree you need to have the ability to turn the ABS off, But I have done plenty of goofing off high speed off road maneuvering with the AWD minivan and I can tell you the ABS makes a difference off road, especially with traction control. If your ABS is functioning properly you still get a build up of dirt and crap infront of your tires....... or atleast on a modern OBDII equipped vehicle.

^^ I completly agree shane abs sucks ass on anything but pavement i can stop my truck fast in the the wet grass than i can in my focus. my truck has 4 wheel disc brakes and the abs sensor isnt plugged in the rear axle so it doesn't function. my truck can stop a hell of a lot faster than my focus can because it turns on the damn abs. i will be removing the rear able shit when i run all new brakes lines on my truck.

Scott your brakes have a problem if you bleed them than have a soft pedal after a little while you have an air leak in you system. the fluid doesn't boil in the calipers its under pressure so it couldn't possible boil. find your real problem its not safe if it has an air leak.
