Replacement bumper bolts..

Well, I've finally gotten around to picking up some sandpaper, a paint/rust grinder drill wheel thing, and some black rattlecans.

Since I have to cut my bolts to get the sucker off to repaint, can I just use regular bolts I have lying around the garage or should I get something better? It's not really something important..

I'm kind of expecting someone to go "OH YOU NEED TO USE GRADE EIGHT AND WHATNOT!" so another thing I'm asking is this, Is grade eight really necessary and how do I tell if a bolt is grade 8/where do I get them? Just like... a hardware store?

Look at the top of the head of your current bumper bolt, and take a look at

http://www.americanfastener.com/technical/grade_markings_steel.asp

if you find anything that matches to what you have, that's the grade you should use... the most common ones are grade 5, with three equally spaced line marks pointing towards the center of the bolt and and grade 8, with six marks pointing the same way. The chart is pretty self explanatory so hopefully you won't have any problems identifying your current bolt grade.

No mark at all, any bolt will do.

They're rusted so bad that its just a blob. That's why I need to cut them.

I was just taking mine off yesterday. They were a 9.8 metric w/ a 14mm head. Don't know the size of the nut, but I took it off with a 3/4" socket

9.8 = Grade 5+ or so english.... grade 5 would do, unless you're pulling something with the bumper, which would bend the damn thing anyways...

Your 'round the corner hardware store should carry grade 5 bolts, btw...
