I mean, fack me! I followed the directions here and elsewhere, marked the bolt and the flange, counted the turns, put it back the right number of turns and everything lined up. No leaks, but now I am getting a very very slight hum when on the throttle from the rear end. I've only driven about 100 miles or so since I replaced it, so I am sure not much damage if anything has been done.

So what do I do now? Take it to a dealer to replace the bolt and crush washer, maybe the pinion bearing too?

This Ranger with its little problems is really getting me down!

Yeah I think so too. Bummer. But at least I only put 100 or so miles on it, so I doubt I did any damage.

I NEVER re-use crush sleeves. They are designed to use one time. They are cheap. When I regear an axle I buy a few extra just in case. Not sure what you have done to the axle. If just replace pinion seal then back lash shouldnt be effected. More than likely their is too much pressure on the bearing. Might need new bearing and new crush sleeve and tighten to correct bearing load.

you need a few tools to get the pinion bearing preload correct and take the carrier out as well. anyone who says otherwise is an idiot.

I am pretty sure the preload is too high. I just replaced the seal and used the marking the nut and counting the threads method...it didn't work.

So I guess I'll bring it to the shop locally that works and drivelines and have them replace the bearing (if needed) along with the crush washer and set the preload correctly.

I just hope that is all that is needed and I didn't damage anything.
