Hi guys,

I am removing my smog pump for "off road use only". I originally thought I could use a 5.0 Mustang smog pump eliminator but it 1) uses a serpentine belt pulley and 2) uses a pulley that presses on a shaft and is not secured with 3 bolts like the original.

I believe I can run a shorter belt, but wasn't sure if there were any other options. I have PS, Alt, A/C, and of course water pump and crank pulleys.

Thanks in advance.

Hi guys,

Sure ya are. :icon_thumby:

I think the easiest thing would be to set the tensioner in the middle of its adjustment (I think it is the alternator??) and take a cut V-belt and get how long you need it. Then take the belt and measurement to a parts store and have them get you what you need.

I need to do that as well, my pump hasn't been hooked up to anything air-wise ever since I got my truck. It is just drag on the engine.

This would be a great thing to add to the sticky at the top of the 2.8L forum once you get it figured out.

Thanks, that is my default plan if no one has a belt number. I'll go ahead and do it and post it.

I removed mine and used a piece of rope to get the measurement.
When I had the motor rebuilt I had the machine shop block the small exhaust ports coming out of the heads that go to this pump (for off road use):icon_thumby:
I figure this could eliminate a potential leak around the headers' gasket.

Looking at it now, since I don't have AC, the belts are close enough to the same size I'll only need to carry one spare.

the power steering pump belt is a perfect fit for running just the alternator, too.for the ports in the head, i just drilled and tapped them, and used a allen head cap screw ..it fit perfect, the screw head is recessed inside the port on the head.

Thanks, you confirmed what I found out last night. PS belt works perfectly.

Did the power steering belt work on the alt, water pump, and crank/balencer?
