i am installing a 4" lift on my ranger and i cant get the pitman arm off, my pullers jaws are to big to get on the backside of it because there is like 2mm if clearence between the pitman arm and gearbox. what tool have you guys been using for this?

This is what I use at work

I crank it down with my 1/2" impact and then smack end of the threaded part with a hammer and they usually just pop off.

thats the exact same tool i have but the jaws wont fit between the gearbox and the pitman arm, the pitman arm is damn near againt the box.

Wow, that's kinda odd. I've never had one that tight to the box.

You can try to force it down a bit with a big cold chisel. Force it between the box and the pitman arm.

that crossed my mind but im worried i might damage the box if i use an air chisal between that and the pitman arm, ive changed pitman arms on many vehicles and never had one that was this close to the box.

I ran into this on mine.
It was ssoooo close, I just ground the ends of the tool barely thinner and it fit.

If it's too thick by quite a bit though, maybe get in there with a Dremel or grinder and open up the gap a little bit (be VERY careful not to nick the sector shaft though).

Your replacing your pitman arm to do a lift... well, the original one is now sacrificial! Cut it with a cut off tool going the same direction as the shaft. Don't cut all the way in or you'll damage the shaft. Now, use a big ass cold chisel along with a similar sized hammer and split it at the cut. VOILA! it's off!
