removing cats?

well here in missouri we don't have to do emissions on vehicles more than 10 years old. My truck is a dog. would it be of benefit to clear out the cats and run a good flowmaster two chamber. I feel like it would have to help some. the truck feels great one day and then powerless the next. I drive the same commute each day and it feels like I've lost fuel economy also.

Replacing the cats may be the better of the two options. Total removal of the cats will not produce the gains you are looking for. In fact it may produce worse symtoms.

Removing the cats accomplishes nothing except make your truck pollute more.

go to www.napaonline.com and look it up. Will more than likely be cheaper somewhere else, but will give you an idea. should be 250'ish for a stock setup and quite a bit less for a universal setup.

FIRST find out what, if anything, is WRONG with your ride before throwing money at it.
Oh yeah, lots of guys HEAR the noise the new pipes are making and then make the mistake of thinking what they HEAR gives them more power... WRONG!

all removing cats does is make noise and lose bottom end response/deeper lower idle rpm. surprised this thread is still open they usually lock anything that has to do with cat removal since its against federal law to do so regardless of state requirements. as far as replacing them aftermarket companies such as magnaflow and catco make hi flow converters for cheap. mine was 60 bux plus install for my 3.0, replaced the precat and long cat with one about 12 inches long and you could see daylight thru. my truck was bogging getting 8mpg no ass whatsoever throwing cels saying rich codes. couldnt figure it out then thought about it for a min said after about 220k and using oil they are prob stopped up. low and behold that was my problem, removed them and dropped it on the floor and 3/4 inch of soot hit the ground. she runs great now altho i retired it for sticking throttle at 280k, have new part to install just havent done so yet!

I just went to the muffeler shop and he told me that is is federal law that if a vehicle came stock with a cat it needs to be there. I dont need to do emissions anymore on my 83 ranger and have considered rodding mine out if there is anything left in there but think that since I did the valve guide seals and my air pump is fairly new a new cat couldn`t hurt anything just to be safe.
