Removing 2.3l oil pan thru the back?

I own a 92 Ranger with the 2.3l engine. The oil pan gasket is leaking and I want to change it. I am also going to change the clutch and slave cylinder as well. My truck is 2wd making the job slightly easier. My question is since I am removing the transmission will the oil pan have enough room to be removed towards the back of the truck? Will anything such as a rod or possibly the oil pickup get in the way?

SS, the answer is NO....not unless you take the flywheel off too & that's questionable. Ask me how I know...lol

I spent two long 12 hour days changing the oil pan gasket in my 88 Ranger (it actually leaked worse after I was done). Unless your 92 is much different than my 88, go ahead and remove the engine. I tried like hell to change mine by lifting it & fought it the whole way. I ended up disconnecting the trans thinking I'd slide the pan out the back...WRONG.

Plan on pulling the engine.

yep, much easier to just pull the engine... makes changing the clutch easy too... the last time my clutch went out I pulled the engine, my oil pan was puking oil badly so I needed to change the pan gasket, the pan is hard enough getting the oil level sensor around the pickup tube just hanging, I can't imagine trying it with the engine installed...

i changed the oil pump with it in the truck.............never again!

i would rather have my nuts slammed in a sliding glass door!

Well, I guess I have to remove the engine for the oil pan gasket. So where do people hook up the chains to the engine for removal? I know there is a mount on the left side towards the front, but how about the right side?

What I did for the chain mount on mine was remove the alternator & slide the alt pivot bolt through a link in the chain, then screw it back in. Have done this twice now & seems to be safe.

Hi, I just changed a 92 2.3 clutch, slave, rear main seal, and oil pan gasket at work last week. With the trans and flywheel out, I just took the pass side motor mount loose and jacked up that side of the motor up, and the pan came out throught the back easily. Of course this was on the lift, so if you're doing it on the ground it might not be nearly as easy. Just my $.02

Yes, I'm replying to a 12 year-old post because this ^^^ was the only one I found that led me down the correct path. Vehicle in question is a '89, which should be pretty close to identical to Josh's '92. With the transmission and flywheel out, all bolts removed from the pan, initially it didn't want to come out. I removed the top nut from the passenger side motor mount and loosened the bottom nut from the driver side mount. Got the hoist out and lifted the engine until it snugged up on the loosened driver side mount. Back under the car (just up on ramps), the pan came out the back - needed to rotate it a bit with the right side of the pan rising as I positioned it backwards.

As many others have experienced, the oil pickup screen was packed full of cork gasket bits. Got that replaced and a new Felpro rubber gasket installed. Note, don't bother trying to use the 4 locators that Felpro provides with the gasket. You need more clearance to use those and it's really not that tough to hold the pan in place with one hand while you get a couple bolts in place on either side to locate the pan in place.
