Relay delay circuit for car starter

Help! I built my own car starter and it works great except that the starter will not disengage once the engine it running. I don't want to destroy my starter. My question is, is there a circuit I can tap into to use as a trigger for a relay to open the starter relay circuit? The vehicle is a 94 reg cab Ranger with a 2.3 and a manual transmission. I always use my parking brake and I park the vehicle in neutral without exception (just to save the "you really shouldn't do that with a manual transmission "argument)

you must have something wired up wrong. and what do you mean you 'built it"? and anybody that says you shouldnt park a stick in gear is an idiot

I had some spare RF stuff hanging around along with some relays so remote+12V receiver+relays= 1 homemade remote starter. The issue is that the remote receiver is a single signal output (ie it's on or it's off). Therefore what's happening is that the output signal has no way of "releasing" my triggerwire to the starter relay. What I'm looking for is a way to use the 87a output on one of the relays to remove power from the starter relay. Anybody know of a wire that only carries signal when the engine is running? As for leaving a stick vehicle parked in gear; with a remote starter, the thing can become pretty damn dangerous if it starts. ...hence the reason I use a parking brake.
