Redline

What is the redline for a stock 2.3? I swapped in the guage cluster out of a B3000 so I could have a tach, but the redline is like 5500. Just curious what the 2.3's redline actually is I am assuming around 4500 or 5000.

my old cluster was 5,500 for the actual "red line" to begin, but i have kissed good ol' 6 a few times..no problems..but in answer, the actual redline part starts at 5,500 RPM. Thats where i shift alot lol

really? 5500 seems so high. I shift at 4300ish when Im really trying to get going.

I shift at 4,500-5,000rpms and above when I'm in a hurry. As far as what the actual redline is, lets see...*goes outside to check tach on dash*...mine starts at 6 grand and ends at 7,200. While it does seem pretty high, I think the only way you could actually cause damage to the motor would be by having the rev limiter removed (via aftermarket programming) and just burying it past 7 grand. I don't think making use of the whole rpm range is bad in any way, but I wouldn't run it @ 50 mph in second gear all day long either...

I'm not sure what the peak is. I seem to remember someone stating that the older (lima) 2.3's peak somewhere around 3,600 rpms. I also have a duratec, so I'm not sure if that makes any difference. One thing I do know, it's pretty slow going until it hits about 3-3 1/2 grand and then it just climbs like crazy from there. That is to say, I don't notice any sudden drop-off in power/performance when I rev it to 5k.

maybe but it sounds pretty good..who doesn't like to have their engine screaming all the way up to 6,000+ RPM??

i also drive "normally" as well; only when i am a) draggin' b) late c) pissed or d) sick of driving slow do i let my engine get up to 5,500 RPM before the shift comes...but to everyone their own, right?

rev limiter is set at 6200ish, it could run at that all day long and not hurt a thing...

peak power is 4600rpm, peak torque is 2600rpm, if you want to accelerate the fastest, you want to shift just past the power peak so you end up just under it

The few and far between 80's models ranger with the 2.3 and a stock tach, the tach goes all the way to 7k, but the peak hp is I believe 4200 and torque is like 3600, but I read that a while back so I could have the words backwards, but anything over 4200 is just noise
