Red and black hoses for the heater

Hi, sorry if this has already been posted but I couldn't find it when I searched.

The previous owner of my truck straight bypassed the heater core going block to block instead of block to heater-heater to block.

So there are two hoses coming through the firewall. One red and one black, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me which one is "in" (into the heater core) and which one is the "out" hose so that I can hook up the heater again.

Normally, the hoses are the same color. They have been changed. If the hoses are the same size, it doesn't matter which goes where. I usually go from pump to heater's drivers side connection, or to the top connection whichever the heater has. Return hose to pass side, or bottom. If the connections are a different size, it is self explanitory.shady

so is the heater core non-directional?
The hoses are the same but in my ignorance on the topic of heater cores I don't know if it could cause problems to hook-up the heater core backwards...

no the core can work in any flow direction, bud there is a vacumm hose and a shout off vavle in line of a "stock line lay out" so if it does not have that then u need to find the vac line a plug it

On a 1990 ranger there is no shtoff valve in the heater core flow path.

It does not matter which way you hook up the heater core.
