I got 3.0 from newer year than my 96 ford came with. I know there is difference, but the block internals should be the SAME ?. MY concern is I don't want to put it back in without new timing chain, and the engine i got had broken Synchronizer on it, (just CAP) . After I tore down mine and saw how completely worn out the cam gear was, i wanted to make sure this one (new used) wasn't either, it wasn't but got new one any ways. NOW there is nothing that i can find that says how to make sure synchronizer and the TDC piston and timing chain should be aligned to so all work together, ATM my arrow on the installation tool points towards fire wall (think that is wrong) 2nd when I tore down to inspect timing chain the mark where not aligned. And I know the piston was on TDC before I put the heads, and accordance to the Chilton timing sync was on 6th tooth from gap. So, when I turned crank to align the MARKS it moved my Synch arrow backwards, which is why points the wrong way. and my piston is no longer at TDC<> So as old school MECH> self-taught, 20-year vet AVIATOIN, I am pretty sure this timing gear is 180 out. So, my question is what's correct way to put them in synch........ all videos show timing set chain should be taught, only fits on one way. aligned to cam and crank MY part arrives today at 5 pm. hope i can get quality response cause ford dealer ship said they couldn't get tech to help for 5 min of his time. Thanks Joe,

here is a start. timing marks on the front, crank dot is up, cam dot points down.
for the sync unit both the housing window and the center tab will point at the retaining bolt. that's about 38 degrees off center pointed at the passenger side firewall.
#1 at TDC compression stroke. both valves closed.

if you do some searching there are lots of pictures/info for the 3.0 engine timing.
open this link, scroll up to post #6

here is another link with front timing pictures.

from a 2005 Ford factory manual. it's the same for older years.

Ok pJ this kind of helps me right direction. So that installation tool with the Arrow is pointless? So as long as the valves are closed, hmm, I have know way to check for compression. other than I put piston on TDC before I installed head. So, i guess if the push rods are down on NUMBER one piston that could be way to identify valves are closed. then align dots. KEYWAY up on crank, cam dot down. well, it either work in couple days or wont. thanks for the help .....

for checking compression, yes both valves closed..
or stick a finger in the plug hole and crank the engine by hand. the compression stroke will expel air.
the tool does work, so do visual methods.

FYI: these are "waste spark systems" that means the spark plugs fire on every revolution so if you have it off by 180 it will still spark.
HOWEVER, the fuel injection uses the cam sync unit to time the fuel. it will not be happy being 180 out.
