Rear winch power

Well we got the rear winch installed but no power as of yet.we think we have found a warn install kit with 20ft of cable but want to read about it. anyone reading this ever use/see it or just ideas in general

I am currently adding a winch to the rear of my 88. I just run a power wire (1ot) from the battery. I upgraded the battery cable between the battery and the frame and then just simply grounded what needed to be grounded at the winch to the frame. Go to a welder supply place and get the cable you need and the ends you need also. You are going to have some money in the power wire but it is worth it in the long run.

Yes, you need a good cable for the front or rear. I have a portable winch carrier for the font and back to use with all the Jeeps and my Ranger. I had to use a long cable for the back of course. It is right at 18 feet long I think. Go to a welder supply shop or get it from Warn. I think my rear cable was like $70 with all the connections I needed if I remember correctly. I bought it about 5 years ago.

WARN is said to have a KIT with 20ft of cable AND a RELAY but I can't find info on it.

If you do find the kit from Warn see what the price is and then do some research local. You say the kit has a relay? It may be for a switch to turn it on and supply power to the back. If you have a good gage wire with a good coating you may not need it. Also if you route it right and keep it away from moving or heated objects you will also be fine.

Its better to run a negitive cable to the battery as well.

As long as the connections are good and clean, grounding a cables as long as they are heavy enough from the battery and one from the winch to the frame is more than sufficient.

I do not have as long a run for my rear winch cables do to the second battery location but I used #2 gauge welding cable for my wires to the battery and it runs flawless. Everything I have read about wiring the winch motors is to always connect the negative cable straight to the battery or it shortens the life of the winch motor.

What about mounting a battery in the bed

you will still need to run cable back to them to keep them charged from the alternator or get a small solar charger panel & mount it in the bed. They showed a solar panel mounted on top of a tool storage box on 4x4 extreme that was mounted to the front of a car trailer.

now that is a cool idea! i wanted to add weight to the rear anyway so 2 big deep cycles wired up to a trickle charger solar panel,have them all close in size so i could swap to under hood to charge or get me home
