hey, i was wondering if anyone can give me a good reason as to why it is the rear right wheel that spins on a stock open ranger diff....i realize that the outer wheel should turn faster and thats what the diff is designed to do, i know how a diff works and there is nothing wrong with mine. i was just curious as to why on a straight shot, or even a slight right turn the right wheel breaks free as opposed to the left, my only thought was it was due to the direction in which the pinion gear rotates...any opinions?

again not associated with any sort of problem, i was just curious

or maybe due to the fact that the pinion gear mates with the right side of the ring gear? (if looking from back of the vehicle)....or has to do with the helical nature of the teeth? i don't know

Truck is heavier on the drivers side, also the driveshaft rotation pushes the axle down on that side.

Yeah its because the truck is heavier on the left side with the gas tank and the driver sitting in the truck and the t case being left side drop and the front diff being on the left side. There is alot more weight on the left side giving the it more traction on an open diff.

Yup, driveshaft rotation direction causes the axle to push down on the left tire and pick up a little on the right tire. The same reason the truck torques over to the right under acceleration, and why drag cars pick up the left tire first in a wheelie.

The driveshaft effects were much more noticeable on my Honda Gold Wing bike with shaft drive. But the same thing applies to my Ranger, just as a percentage, not so much.

gribly has the correct answer....

because the drive shaft rotates ccounter clockwise (when viewed from the rear) torque reaction tends to lift the right rear tire.
