I have a 2002 ranger edge(automatic), and have noticed the "bump" from a dead stop. I pulled the driveshaft and greased the slip yoke. Nothing has changed.

After listening more closely it sounds like its coming from the rear end. It doesnt do it as soon as I hit the gas, it normally does it about 1/4-1/2 of the way through first gear. Aside from that the car shifts fine. Any ideas?

Are you sure it isn't actually happening at the 1/2 shift?

The 1/2 can be the hardest to actually catch because the gears are so close.

No its a definite slip or hesitation somewhere. It sounds like its from the rear end. I just have no idea where or how to start trying to fix the issue.

What I am getting at is that it could be banging into 2nd gear. It slips for half a second and then slams in and BOOM.

I thought the same thing, then i put it in first gear and it does the same thing.

if the slip yoke is worn, no amount of grease will fix it.were the splines dry? can you see shiny spots? if so, it is worn out
