I'm rebuilding my rear brakes and am having a bit of an issue having the shoes stay in position; as I was looking at it, i realized what the potential issue is, should the e-brake lever thingie be to the outside of the shoe pin? Right now it it's to the inside and when I insert the horizontal piece with the spring, it presses the lever against the pin, not allowing it to move further and pushing the shoes apart.

The lever goes behind the shoe.

I just did my 01 drums yesterday. Fairly simple honestly. Did you check the other side for fitment comparisons?

The horizontal piece with spring is the park brake strut. It is designed to push the shoes apart via the park brake lever... which is the piece held to the secondary shoe with the horse shoe clip.

Get the shoes in place with the strut in place. Once you get the return springs connected... spring tension will pull the shoes together.

Now if the strut keeps the top of the shoes from returning to the anchor pin on the backing plate... one of two things is your culprit.

Either the park brake is applied... or you have sticky park brake cables.

Again, a great reason to move up to the Mustang rear disc brakes. The how to is on this website.
