Hello,

I am rebuilding my 9 inch rear drums on my 1987 Ford Ranger for the first time and the shoes seem to be spread too far to allow the drum back on. On one side I was able to get it on with some effort but it could only spin backwards with effort and not at all forward??

I am thinking that the parking brake might be stuck on however I do not know how the parking brake arm inside the drum should look in order to confirm this. However nothing in the drums move when the parking brake is actuated.

I also read that the little lip on the edge of the drums braking surface needs to be sanded down before putting it back on? Does this mean it should be flush with the whole braking surface or just lowered and the rust removed?

The little adjuster screw is fully retracted.

I have attached pictures below

Thank you

In first picture the left shoe is not seated at the top

Open bleeder and press shoes in, then close bleeder, you won't get air in
You can open bleeder while you push the drum on, put a pan down
Fluid will Gravity bleed from Master while bleeder is open, no air will come in

New shoes can be too thick or not perfectly curved
There was a machine used in Brake shops that was used to grind new shoes to correct curve and thickness, back in the "good old days"

You can do the same
When you put the drum on see where it is hanging up on the shoes, i.e. marks

You can press Parking brake pedal down and shoes should expand then release it and they will retract, if so all is well no stuck cables
