rear disk conversion kit

For the cost of that, you can swap in and rebuild an Explorer axle.

^ X2,3 and 4...for that price I could buy and build both front and rear disc brake axles...SSBC always were way overpriced, IMO they are not that good of a product to warrant that much of a price

oh:sad:
I saw it looking for parts for my ranger I didn't think about price just went "OH a disk conversion kit!" and posted it:icon_twisted:
oh well

I wish I were able to shop for parts without having to look at the prices, the rest of us don't have an umlimited budget...so whats your secret:icon_confused:

I did cobra front and rear brake swaps on my ranger for $1100, thats new rotors front and rear, brand new 10th ann calipers, braided lines for the rear, brackets for the rear, and custom front hubs and caliper spacers. take a look at my cardomain for some pics. and the setup in their pic looks just about like factory cobra calipers.

For 100 I bought a 31 spline Exploder rear w/ disc that had 80,000 miles on it. It came with brand new rotors, pads, near new p brake cables and rebuilt calipers. I bought new lines, bearings, seals and p brake shoes for about 50. I paid like 60 for full synthetic fluid and a bottle of friction modifier. So I paid 210 all together for a full disc setup and rebuilt rear axle. All I had to do was flop perches, add shock mounts and cut off old mounts (optional). I also figured with the money I saved I would go ahead and repaint the whole axle and replace the ujoints in the rear shaft.

yep .......... it was actually cheaper and less time consuming to buy a 96+ explorer rear axle with a 3.73 L/S and bolt it in than it was to let midas do a complete rear brake job on my 91 explorer (RIP).

this is a stupid way you have to weld shit and everything mustang brakes are much easier to put on a ranger axle

read this

The really stupid way of doing it is putting disk brakes on the Ranger axle to start with.

For $100 I got a 1996 Explorer 8.8 with:
3.73 gears to match what is currently in the truck
factory trac-lock differential
factory disc brakes
31 spline 8.8 (much stronger what was put in 98% of Ranger axles)
and a set Explorer leaf springs

The only additional expenses so far was new clutch packs, axle and pinion seals, oil, axle bolts, a brake line and two rotors.

^^^ i have the same thing under my truck too but for someoen that doesnt want an explorer axle the mustang brakes is the best way imo

That makes two of us.lol:icon_thumby:

COBRA COBRA COBRA COBRA COBRA

Oh...did I mention COBRA!? Virtually completely a bolt on(just gotta cut the caliper bracket to slide over the axle shaft), and can be done using all new components for under $400. Or go 95-04 GT from the boneyard on the dirte cheape.

MUCH better design than the explorer setup. Makes me mad I put in an Fx4 31spline axle.

MUCH better design than the explorer setup.

And you are still stuck with an inferior axle compared to the Explorer axle swap.

It all depends on what you want to do, Mustang brakes probably have more upgrades available, but 31 spline 8.8's have more limited slips/lockers available. My little drums stop the truck fine (most of the stopping power of anything comes from the front anyway) but if I am goin to pick over polishing my 7.5 with disc brakes or dropping in an Ex 8.8 with limited slip that has disc brakes... the 7.5 is going away pretty quick.

I am at about $200 so far, maybe a tad over, and I am upgrading pretty much the entire rear drivetrain behind the driveshaft and below the frame with Explorer stuff... not just the brakes. Once I get the 302 in the driveshaft will also be upgraded to take the larger (for me) U-joints that the Explorer uses as well. Newer trucks already use them though so it isn't an issue for them.
