Rear brakes

I feel embarrassed asking this, but does anyone have a link or a how to on changing rear drum brakes. I can do the fronts in no time at all but I have never dealt with drum brakes, and by the looks of it I don't want to start tearing springs and whatever else off before I know what I am doing.

If you google it there are some good walk throughs on line. No need to feel embarrassed its not a frequent occurrence to change them and with everything switching to rear disks I don't think it will be long before drums are a thing of the past. But as a tip, start with one side but pull the drum off the side your not working on so you have a polish blueprint of where everything goes and how it is supposed to look. Also be careful around the wheel cylinders if they haven't been done in a while and have had the same shoes on them they have a tendency to tear the seals and start to leak

Get the right tool for the springs and know how to use it, it is cheap and will make the job much easier/quicker.

Then, only take one side apart at a time. Use the other as a template. I also like to lay the springs and such out in the order they came out in.


Pay close attention to little details like differences in the length and thickness of the friction material. If you have a short shoe it goes in front. If you put it in the back the parking brake won't work and the adjuster will fall out as soon as you hit the pedal.


BTW, there is no shame in not knowing how or wanting to do drum brakes. I spent an inordinate about of money on my rear disc swap and probably 95% of my motivation for it was not having to do drum brakes anymore.
