I have a leaking rear axle seal on my '03 FX4 Level II. The seal replacement process looks pretty easy but what's involved with releasing the axle in the Torsen differential?

Haven't opened the cover yet but from pictures I've seen it looks like there's a small bolt that yoou remove then pull the plug out?

That is probably true. It should be pretty obvious when you get the cover off the diff and rotate the carrier around to where you can see the plug.

Once the plug is out, push the axle in until the C-clip is exposed. Pull the clip. Then the axle can be pulled out. Replace seal and reverse the process.

Any idea what size seal I need? The parts stores Oreilley, Autozone, Advance don't have the FX4 option when you specify your vehicle.

If the Torsen really is a 31 spline, I'd look for the largest seal offered or ask for one for a 91-01 Explorer...

It's for a Ford 8.8", 31-spline axle. I know OReily's has them. I had to buy one in New Mexico and replace one at a campground in Colorado just over a month ago.

Good to know. Any idea what the PN is?

Best guess is 8835S

Pretty good guess. Here is the empty box.
Rear axle seal, Torsen Diff?

Tackled the job today. I'm guessing it was a two-hour job as I was wrestling with a stubborn brake line at the same time. Was kind of intimidated at first as I've never been into the axles or diff before. It was much easier and much messier than what I expected. :)
