Hi Folks, I have a 1994 ford ranger 4.0 v6 4x4 I live in Washington. Picture is for tax.
I love this truck but I’ve been having some issues with it. When I first got it, it ran fine for the most part. With the slight misfire at idle. Then sometimes on the freeway it would lack power until I floored it and it upshifted. These symptoms are something I never got to.
I took the truck to baker lake which is about 50mins from me. It was a family trip so my mom made sure my bed was packed full. I have 35 inch tires and a 6 inch lift. There’s alot of money that been put into this ranger. Otherwise i probably would have seller it by now. We were camping off roading. I wanted to check out the top of the trail head. I had some fun. We got back down and smelled burning atf. I check the fluid it looked fine nothing of it. It was just a tad low so I added some. I do wanna say I didn’t go above 25mph going to the top of the trail. The remainder of the trip was just fine. Until it got to going home. We got about 15mins from home via the freeway. The truck lost power and wouldn’t want to go above 35mph. Which is really low for the freeway. I let it sit for awhile. Replaced the vaccum modulator also did a pan drop and filter change. The fluid was dark and smelly. I will say I forgot to blow out the vaccum hose. But I didn’t notice any atf when I pulled it off.
Now the symptoms I’m getting are it pretty much runs fine and shifts fine until it’s warm or after 5 mins. Even if I let it sit for 4 hours. The symptoms come back in two minutes. The trucks check engine light goes on. The. Into goes essentially into a limp mode. It doesn’t allow me to shift out of second. I’m basically stuck going 25 mph. At a stop it wants to lurch forward even with the brake on. I also wanna say the power does get worse going up a hill.
I bought spark plugs and wires for it. I have yet to put them in. Because if they wernt the issue I didn’t want to waste time on them. I haven’t change the fuel filter yet but may do that aswell. AI was telling me it could be my TPS or TCC or even as far as my valve body. I will say when I rev it at idle the rpm does hang a bit.
Should I continue trying to diag the TCC? Should I put in the spark plugs and wires?
Anything else I should take a look at?
I would love to get this diagnosed myself. It is a bit of a basket case. I also don’t want to take it to a shop and have them guess throwing parts at it. I’ve owned the truck for about a year now.
I plan on working on it on Saturday. So any ideas would be great. Thanks for the help in Advance. I do really need this truck for the upcoming winter as my other vehicle is RWD. I also plan on taking it on a trip to Yellowstone in May.
