Let's see Paul Allen's Ranger.
Did plugs, wires, ignition coil, and compression test. 4.0l SOHC, 192,000 miles.

I am atrocious at reading plugs. Let me know what you think.

Also #2 and #3 are a #^$(!^!%$ to get to with the compression tester. 🙂

Looks like "XP 5143" to me.
 
Not sure what burned the electrodes on 2 and 3 but they're screwed... Looks like the mixture is decent but it should be... would be curious on the current bank to bank fuel trims to see if 2 and 3 might be running lean or something... Looks like a little oil buildup on 2 and 3 which can cause preignition and that type of issue I would imagine...

That many miles I bet the low compression on the 3 cylinders is from worn exhaust valves...

All in all don't look bad, how long have those plugs been in there?

I don't believe Ford recommends it...

Depending on mileage... don't think they look terrible. Some deposits on 2 and 3... might be from anti seize.

I get 2 and 3 through the wheel well with the tire removed. Two foot extension and a swivel plug socket.

50-60k on the plugs... fuel trims are always negative since new injectors, -3 to -9 depending on rpm/load range, but I'm running a big fuel pump, so not surprising. It does run 1-2% off bank to bank. I'll record some data.

Exhaust valves wouldn't surprise me.

Probably were anti seized when I put them in, I'm usually careful to wipe it off tho.

Yeah... I wasn't too excited about the compression test results. It's not "bad," but it's certainly not as consistent as I had hoped.

Did you run the test with all the plugs out... battery charger... throttle wide open?

Oh Lord no, I'm a terrible mechanic. One at a time, throttle open. Just ran along and replaced one after another and tested compression in clear flooded engine mode. New battery, so didn't worry about that one.

FWIW, fuel pump makes jack squat difference on fuel trims assuming the fuel pump does not exceed the flow that the regulator can bypass to maintain expected pressure...

Were the plugs put in at the same time as the injectors or before? If before I would expect the injector issue fixed the issue that caused the initial plug damage but it still ran so you sent it anyway :)

To see real engine health a leak down test would be much better than a compression test, but I'd just run it, nothing looks too scary...

Huh. I had wondered if I was overfeeding it. Now I know. 🙂

This current testing is the last round of checks and refresh before I force feed it. Trying to give myself the best starting point with what I have before I inevitably start a thread titled, "So I blew up my engine..."

That's what I thought I remembered, so yeah, those two injectors were borked (technical term), so now it's more gooder (also technical...)

That's about enough miles to get the rings worn down enough to be able to take some extra thermal expansion :), or at least that's what the turbo LS guys do... take a high mileage 5.3L or 6L, put ebay head studs in without taking the heads off then just full send...
