I just did an oil change in my truck today.

Its a 99 4x4 off road 4.0 with 67,000 miles. I went with quaker state 5x 30 full synthetic. Now, I notice a "rattle" sound from under the truck when its in neutral. When i give it some, the noise goes away. When i'm driving, the noise isnt there. only happens when im sitting in park I used to have another 99 ranger, but 3.0 with a horrible rattle.

Could this be a timing chain rattle? It dosent sound like its coming from the tranny.

Any help would be appreciated.

Check all the heat shields on the exhaust for rust. On earlier models there is a stamped steel ID plate on the cats that will fall in between the cat and shield as it expires.

Good luck

I agree. It sounds like its exhaust related. I had the same rattle sound from a loose heat shield on the cat of my old contour.

Yup, had that happen. Really annoying too, sometimes its there, sometimes its not.

Your best bet is to crawl under and have a look at the exhaust system. Chances are that's where the rattle is coming from. That's also why every vehicle I have ever bought lost every single heat shield. I don't care if they're there for a reason, I hate the rattle they make when they rot away from the spot where they're supposed to be lol

thanks, i will check out the heat shields as soon at it gets above freezing up here in maine.
