Ranger SVO Hood

Its coming along and your advice about fit has been the biggest help. We spent all day Saturday making the scoop fit the hood. And it REALLY paid off. Welding the scoop to the hood went super well. Absolutely NO warping.

Again, I've never done metal work like this before, so I've really learned alot.

ya,you see a lot of people thinking 'it doesn't need to fit perfect,i can fill that with weld'.

unfortunately,it don't work that way.i've found that every hour spent on fit is three hours saved in the end.and you get a better finished product for your efforts, too.

Well, I had some things come up and was not able to work on the hood until today. We finished welding the scoop to the hood and started on the body work. So far everything is on target and everything is going smooth.

We decided to attach the hood to the truck and see where we are and what still needs to be done

Now for the body work, because so much time was spent on fit, body work will be simple and really easy. In fact after grinding down the welds, we saw how little filler would be needed to finish out the scoop.

We went over it with a DA with 80 grit. Shot a little cheap rattle can primer on it to see where we were at. And we LIKED what we saw.

Now to start on the ducting

Now we still have a long way to go, but we are getting it done

Love the hood, and the look you're going for with the louvers and offset.

About how much total has this cost you so far and how much work time?

The hood I found at a local salvage yard, it cost me $70. The SVO scoop cost me $145, and that included shipping from New York.

The louvers cost me about $25.

The rest is time and labor. I only work on it in my spare time, but I can tell you this, patience is the key. If your on a schedule, forget it. Just welding the scoop to the hood seemed to take forever.

Finally, the paint and clear coat will be around $200.

$440 and a little patience is a very reasonable price to pay for a well done one-off custom piece. Like many things I've seen on here it's given me some inspiration. Keep up the good work.

it's looking good,svo.

you can bet you're not going to see another one coming around every corner.that's what i love about custom building...you get to have something that's truely one of a kind.

I just can't wait to see it on the truck. You've done a killer job making that piece. Really nice work all around.

What brand & size of welder are you using? With flux wire or using an Argon bottle?
The welding helmet looks like mine from Harbor Freight.

I know, its been awhile. Again, I'm not in a hurry. I just wanna get it done right the first time. We finished up the majority of the body work today and shot the first coat of primer.

Its going to be about two weeks before we work on it again. We are both teachers and we are going to take some serious time off.
