Does anyone know if the ranger 8.8 4x4 reared is the same width as a 2wd reared? What years had the 8.8 ,was it 99-01 or something like that? I believe they came with 410 gears, right?

Very few came with 4.10 gears

But ALL 4.0 powered trucks came with 8.8" axles

In any given year range the rear axle width is the same for both 2wd or 4x4.

If you have an '83-92 Ranger a good upgrade is the 8.8" axle out of a 1993-up 4.0 powered Ranger, these are 2" wider than an '83-92 axle but have the same spacing of the spring and shock mounts.

Like the old Pontiac adverts "wider is better".

Just to add, most 4x4's came with Fords Limited Slip, Trac Loc, in the rear, 7.5" or 8.8"

Nice add-on for 2WD

If you are looking around wrecking yards the door label is where to look: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/axle_codes.shtml
That tells you 7.5 or 8.8, ratio(3.73, 4.10, ect...) and OPEN or L/S(limited slip)
