Ok guys im sure this has been answered a million times but im at work and cant search the site now. I have a 96 ranger 4.0 2wd 5spd and i need a new tranny. had a leak and lost fluid completely destroyed the countershaft, input shaft, all the front bearings.. Anyways Would a 5spd out of a bronco 2 work and would it be as strong?? thanks guys

A Bronco II with a M5OD would be rare and would be a 4wd trans. There were some 2.9 Rangers with the Mazda, but it wasn't common. Any 2wd 4.0 trans will work though - you can get it from any manual trans 2wd Explorer.

Thanks for the help. So it doesnt matter what year explorer it is as long as its a 4.0? What is the dif besides the lower first gear or the 2.9l?

The 2.9 Mazda trans is just as strong, the only difference is in some of the gear ratios. I've actually got a 2.9 trans in my Explorer, and it just took a couple of days to get used to it. Works fine, and I've probably had it in there for 20k miles. Any year Explorer or Ranger 4.0 2wd trans will work.
