i have a 1986 ford ranger with the 2.9l it have new coil, fuel filters, cap, rotor ,plugs, wires, o2 sensor, air filter. now the problem is when its cold it runs good but after i take it for a drive and it heats up and i shut it down. when i try and start it up after it barley runs and rough idles and if you give it gas it pops and sputters and dies. then if you let it sit for a few hours it runs again. i have looked over all the conectons grounds and cant figure it out. :beer:

Best place to start is getting codes....really

top suspects are;
TFI (aka ignition module)
relays
MAP sensor
Temp sensor

sounds like a winner

the TFI controls the amount of spark going out correct i was eating caps like crazy the cotact point was getting to hot or what ever and frid the cotact point wonder if the TFI module would cause that.:icon_welder: :icon_welder:

the tfi controls the signal the coil controls the spark sounds like the coil to me is the coil square or the old style round. you can use the round type but you need a ballast resistor from the ignition on to the pos on the coil probably what is burning the cap and rotor and plugs

chasing problems

the coil is new and the plugs haven't gone bad since this issue i dont think the cap is getting cooked any more havent been there in a week haha possibly the tfi module dont know why would it run good in the moring and not after it warms up :icon_twisted::icon

the coil is square thinking about changing all my ground wires not a big deal and is cheap this ranger is my baby it has a 4inch lift with 33's and i love it cant wait to get running properly so i can go wheeling.:icon_cheers:

How'd you make out with this? I have stuff going on thats similar to you.

My ranger had the EXACT same problem. I couldn't figure it out for the longest time. I replaced the MAP sensor and it runs normal now. Its really easy to change out and runs about $60.
