Ranger 1984 overheating problem

Hi all,

I have a 1984 Ranger V6 2.8 Liter that constantly overheats. The coolant oftentimes doesn't circulate, even though I installed a new 180 degree thermostat and water pump. Sometimes if I back flush the system and then try it, it will circulate, but it stops circulating at random intervals and immediately overheats. When this happens no heat comes out of the heater core either. I tried removing the thermostat and the fluid seems to circulate fine. But it should also work fine once the thermostat opens, but this is not the case. Any suggestions as to why this happens? Thanks in advance

This may sound stupid but I had a 84 bronco II 2.8 and when I was reading forums and such about the 2.8 it seems sometimes people place two thermostats in these motors by mistake. Have you pulled the housing from the intake to make sure there is no thermostat? If not that maybe your thermostat is bad. Have you tested it to see if it actually opens?
