Random Clutch Burning? (M5OD)

The last couple of days I've been getting whiffs of something that smells like a burning clutch.....problem is the clutch isnt slipping whenever I notice the stink. The smell can come up just about any time the truck is running...at idle in neutral, going down the street in any gear, pretty much anytime it pleases.

And on top of that, the same day I started getting whiffs of burning clutch, I started getting a wicked shimmy from dead-stop to Go. I've been watching engine RPM and its not stumbling or even dropping below 1000rpm...and it doesnt shake after I get moving. Every shift after that while moving is 100% smooth.


Anyone got some ideas? I dont know much about Transmissions, so I'm kinda stumbling in the dark. Any help is appreciated

EDIT: I dont know if it helps, but its got 207,740 miles on it without a rebuild....just a new slave and a clutch replacement about 40k ago.

Is your air conditioner on?

There is a clutch there, too.

With the hood open, you can hear it engage; it sounds like a sharp click.

The A/C isn't on, it doesnt even work anyway, lol

The AC comes on when your using the defroster too.

If it's out of refrigerant, the AC won't come on regardless of switch position.

Are you sure you aren't smelling the brakes? Try smelling for it from a cold start, then again after a drive. You could also hold your hand on each wheel by the lugnuts to feel if one wheel is getting hotter than the others (brake dragging).

Your "shimmy" + "clutch smell" makes me think (front) BRAKES.


You can eliminate any chance that the AC clutch is "trying to engage" by taking the connector off the compressor (tie it back).

A/C compressor clutches are typically Steel-on-Iron.

No stinky friction material.

It cant be brakes, because the smell can happen ANYTIME the truck is running. Standing still, going down the road, idle, whatever. Nor is it climate control related, as its summer time. My A/C doesn't work, and its pointless to run the heater during the summer. No need for the defroster, either.

The "Shimmy" is from stop-go 1st or 2nd gear, worse in second, with no brakes applied.

Just for fun I checked the serpentine belt for damage/unusual wear, but didnt come up with anything.

This is a recent problem, up till now I haven't ever had strange smells or crazy vibrations from this thing, and my driving style hasnt changed any, I'm at a loss.
