Ok so when I start my 99 ranger, the radiator fan usually is spinning very fast for some reason, and is loud because of all the air its moving. It usually goes away within a minute. Well today I noticed it had come on when I first drove it, but later in the day, more than a few hours later. I started it and the fan wasn't on at all.

Im wondering how the heck this fan operates. All vehicles ive experienced with have had e-fans and only kick on at certain temps.

any info on this fan system for my 99 ranger 3.0 5spd would be much appreciated.

Your fan is clutch-coupled to the serpentine drive pulley, and the clutch is temperature sensitive - the warmer it gets the more it locks up and spins your fan faster for more cooling.

Your fan should always be turning at least a little bit with the engine running, so if your fan isn't turning at all then there's probably a problem.
