I think I fried my starter tonight(I'll find out tomorrow just how bad). On start up, while I have the starter engaged, it clicks and you can hear it jumping. It sounds terrible. So, my question is this: Would a starter from an '86 3.8L Thunderbird work on my '93 4.0L Ranger? I know it's probably a shot in the dark but I'm strapped for cash right now and I have an '86 T-bird laying in my yard.

Thanks in advance.

since you have the 3.8 starter on hand, pull it out and compare it to the 4.0 starter. count the starter pinion teeth, measure the nose cone depth and compare the mounting pattern. if those all line up (and the motor physically fits into the ranger), then it should work.

Any other advice? I don't want to dig out the T-bird for a starter that 'may' work. I need a 'yes' or 'no' here. Sorry if I seem rude, but the snow here is really heavy and it'll take forever to get the car out and I don't like doing work I don't have to.

Call up your local Auto Parts dealer and have them look up the starter on both vehicles and see if they are the same.

i checked napas site. it looks like the 3.8 starter mounts on the opposite side of the motor, meaning the bolt pattern is a mirror image of the 4.0's starter. it wont work.
