Questionaire supercharged 4.0 OHV

Wow lot's of nay sayers on here. Everyone has a reason not to do something when all we want is help on how to do it. Sure we sould drop in a 5.0 but thats been done to death I've never seen a SC4.0 (in real life) and thats one of the reasons I want to do it. I don't want to have the same cookie cutter setup that everyone else has. So I think I'm gunna just build a manifold and buy a megasquirt and figure it all out on my own. thanks for all your help guys.

Naysaying for naysaying's sake is bad.

Naysaying for practical reasons is simply pointing out
reality to someone who doesn't get it...

Your reasons for doing what you are suggesting is illogical
and irelevant.

You are being emotional and worrying about the "process"
to gain better performance rather than the purpose and the
end result.

Rather than putting an SC onto a 4.0 i'd be far more inclined
to swap in, No not a 5.0, but a 5.8.

you want torque?

I'm all about results.

HOW those results are achieved?
I'm not going to spend "cubic dollars" to solve a "problem"
I could solve with far cheaper cubic inches.

Yeah, an SC on a 4.0 sounds slick, but "sounding slick"
doesn't do it for me.

Having an SC would likely impress people.
Frankly I think impressing people purely for the sake of
impressing them is kinda shallow... as is anyone who does it.

When I go out of my way to impress someone I'm invariably
doing it to plant an idea in their head....

I consider "Being an evil influence" to be a worthy goal in life :icon_twisted:

Yeah, you have an evil idea, but if you want to play "sicker than thou"
quit now cause you're gonna lose.

The "nay saying" you are getting is all practical "nay saying"

But honestly after 30months living with a 4.0 5sp 4x4 supercab
I am at a total loss to figuire out "whats broken" that needs to
be fixed...

There is nothing REASONABLE that I've ever asked my truck
to do that it hasn't done.

Frankly? I consider "Asking it" to be a mustang GT is unreasonable.

^Pulling up to a mustang with a five-oh and smoking them off the line in a 6 cylinder would be well worth the time to do the work and spend the money, IF I had it. haha

I've looked into a SC for my 4.0 SOHC. The cost pretty much falls into the typical hp/cost ratio. It runs about $100.00/hp for bolt ons.

Jus think about that boost put stress on a engine, and therefore ya have failure if not built right. If i was ya I'd go all out and rebuild the whole motor with forged parts instead of stock.Bottomend is what counts the most. But then ya gotta have a tranny tht can hold tha torque.

I thought about Supercharging my 4.0, but instead I just re-geared the axles.

If that's all you want to do, and frankly I think wanting to do that and spending an enormous ammount of money to do that is infantile, then
there's another way that isn't so expensive and therefore not quite as infantile (and I have my own infantile moments behind the wheel or
behind a wrench as the case may be).

And I've said it before, Nitrous.

Nitrous oxide is mechanically simple to install and has a
rediculously small underhood footprint.

UNLIKE a blower which generally (except for a paxton) replaces the entire upper intake, or a turbocharger which requires intrusive modifications to the exhaust and major fabrication.

You want bang for the buck? the blue bottle will get it for you.
and at <$10/hp.

I'd hesitate to run more than about a 60hp shot and I wouldn't think of touching it in 1st or second gear, but...

Last comment? you wanna impress a stranger in a mustang?
buy and drive a Ferrari of an AMG6.5 Mercedes coupe.

Nothing you do in a truck is going to impress them... presuming your truck doesn't emminate a blue glow and rise straight into the sky.

I'm with allan on this one. I've built slow cars into fast cars, and many have assumed they were slow, and fell prey to it. However, when it context of a truck your really going to be in the middle of nowhere by yourself. Many popular supercharger manufacturers have attempted, and made kits for these trucks, but there is a reason why they aren't made anymore. It's a truck, use it for a truck. If you want a fast truck, buy a lightning. Blowing the doors off a mustang will take alot more then a supercharged 4.0. Many turbo'd 4.0's make stock/slightly modified 5.0 power. On top of the weight it's even more less attractive. You'd be better off with a v8, I will say it, Allan will say it, as will many many others. Would I love to have more power for the sake of daily driving my truck? Hell yes, but is it useful from a performance truck aspect, not at all.

I don't particularly want to blow the doors off of a 5.0 Mustang Cobra, but I'd like to at least blow the doors off of a 4.0 SOHC Mustang LOL.

Really, my deal is this. I've had fast cars, I've had turbo chargers etc.. I've never had a supercharger. I was looking at Explorer Express' supercharger kits. They are pricey but they're keyed directly towards the 4.0 SOHC in RBVs.

I had the financing setup to do this, but it fell through (long story about how families destroy themselves after loved ones die), so in the spirit that I fell in love with, my wife now hangs her head out of the window and goes WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH when I go WOT LOL. Man, I love that woman, she lives in the real world LOL.

This arguement seems to come around often, and the OP stated he was looking for ideas and help in basic charging.

One thing no one seems to have mentioned in this thread is that race tracks have many modded cars/trucks that run E/T's in various forms. What is needed is forehand research. Go to a local track, talk to the guys who run these beasts and see what they actually do to their rigs. You might find out first hand that what you "think" you will accomplish is actually not ever going to be accomplished with out BIG $$$$$. with that said, go to the bank and get yourself a $10K line of credit and build to your hearts content.

Better yet, with a 4cyl DOHC. Of course the turbo charger was as big as a large pizza LOL.

I had a m90 on my 98 and have a kit to do so coming soon after testing is done, and have been running a m112 on my nicer ranger. over kill for a basic 4.0 but not for mine.

The weight? I'm pretty sure a 4.0 weighs less then a 5.0 and how much does a super charger weigh? Like 10 pounds. I think I'll take the SC 4.0 thanks.

And as for "cubic dollars" (never heard that before by the way, I kinda like it) I got a deal and a half on my SC, found it on ebay randomly one night for 60 bucks! I was kinda worried about if it worked or not but when I got it, it was in damn near perfect condition! Not even any carbon on it. So I think I'm coming in pretty cheap on this project.

I just got my 4.0 (not SC yet) all wired up and running today. I was pretty excited. I need to go to the junkyard and find some bolts, a lot of them got lost when I pulled 4.0 and let it sit for over a year. But I hope to be driving it tommorow and if not then I'd better be diving by friday cuz it's my birthday and I think it would be a nice present to myself.

I can't believe it!! AllanD actually used a smiley face!! :shok:

It would be easier to turbo it than to supercharge it. Use an intercooler and run your boost gauge from the intake manifold to make sure your get 5psi after pressure drop.

I am about a week from having someone fabricate a turbo set up for my 4.0 ohv, I would give my left testicle to be able to go with a supercharger kit instead, so if someone is still making the adapters and kit to put one on there, I would love the info.
