I just bought a 8,8 4.10 LSD rear end for my 96 2WD. The gears and bearings all seem to be good but I am thinking about changing the clutch plates. What is the benefit of adding an extra plate? Also, should I consider getting the carbon fiber plates? I am running 31 inch tires.

Adding to or rearranging the clutch pack order makes them grab harder/slip less. Carbon fiber lasts longer than the traditional friction material.

Having a tighter limited slip is really nice off road if you don't want or need a locker. Can be helpful in road racing applications too. If it's real tight your tires will chirp going around sharp corners.

Yeah, what @Shran said.

Also, some gear oil now comes with limited slip additive so before you add any, check and make sure. The additive makes things slippery so the clutches don’t grab as hard so you don’t want to add more than you need. I’ve come across people who think that you should add extra additive because it will “work better like that” but they obviously don’t understand how any of this works. The harder you want it to grab, the less additive you use. No additive is hard on the clutch material though so you need some.
