The last couple of times I've attempted to engage the 4X4 function using the push-button (87' B2 AT 4x4 Eddie Bauer with push-button 4x4 engagement) it has not engaged right away. It does not make the loud clicking, or do anything at all when the button is repeatedly pushed. After driving about 10 miles or so it seems to engage properly, and everything is A-OK.

Exactly how does this system work? Electric to vacuum? What might the problem be? Transfer case or hub engagement? (Last time I had the hubs apart, a few years ago but not many miles ago, everything looked A-OK, and worked A-OK afterwards.) Is there anything short of taking the hubs apart that will help me diagnose the problem? Thanks.

Well one easy way to find out if you hubs are shot. with your truck parked in 2wd, you can turn the driveshaft from the transfer case to the front axle. Now click it into 4wd, this should be locked. if the drive shaft locks up when in 4wd then you know its a problem with the hubs. Your transfer case is electric and in all honesty I have no idea how the hubs work. The vacuum hubs didnt come out until 98.

Hope this helps

On these t-cases, there is an electric motor on the back of the T-case, this motor is what changes it from 2wd to 4wdhi and 4wdlo, sometimes the motor can be on it's way out or the brushes need to be cleaned, I think there is something in tech library on this
