My credo
Low range in Nova Scotia on YouTube!
So, I can get a 2003 ranger 4x4 auto ext cab for $1200(1000 maybe)
Or
1996 ranger auto 4x4 with a broke clutch pedal and a 1994 ranger 2x4 for $800.

Thoughts? Off roading only.
Dana28 vs 35
7.5 vs 8.8
Two vs one?

To play in the mud?

I'm biased toward the 96/94 combo.

I agree with Eric...

for what its worth, the 96 should have a Dana 35. If it is an extended cab w/ the 4.0 it probably has the 8.8 as well.

in the 96/94 combo, is one truck a runner and the other parts? the clutch pedal is probably fairly easy to fix, may possibly need some welding on the firewall. if they are both runners, not bad, and is that 800 for both or 800 each? Also if the 96 is an auto, the clutch pedal should not be even in the truck lol if it is, there was some backyard mechanical engineering goiing on, and you might want to rethink it...

So what engine do all three have?

How does an automatic have a broken clutch pedal...

Just double checked and the 2003 is actually a 96 as well...duh...
They are all 3.0's. The pair for $800, 2wd is auto (with a seized alternator and chewed up belt all over the motor) and the 4wd is manual with the socket where the clutch rod goes snapped off. The other is a 4wd with auto but now that I see it's a 96 as well I guess that answers my question.

The 1200 one is nice shape and currently on the road, the pair have been off the road for 6 months or so.
I know the one on the road hasn't been sitting, no hidden issues, etc but.....all I want is a truck to cruise the power line so it would be a shame to cut up or beat up a nice one. I think I'll get the pair.

96 so it would be 28/7.5 wouldn't it? Oh well, I'll do some research.

Lol! Thanks for the replies guys, I started typing and the wife started yelling, got back and posted and see others have posted as well.
Yes the broken clutch pedal is in a manual 4x4truck lol.

My 94 has a D35 and 8.8 28spline 3.73 with a 4.0l OHV
Good Chance in a 96 that you would have the same...

96 will be a D35. if it is not an extended cab 4.0, it likely has a 7.5 rear end, but could also have the 8.8.

best way to find out is look at it. the 8.8 pumpkin has a squarish with rounded corners differential cover, the 7.6 has straight top and bottom with curved sides differential cover.

The axles themselves in both 7.5 and 8.8 are 27 spline, but the 8.8 has heavier gears. If you want a "true" 8.8 you need to get an axle out of an explorer or a later FX4 Ranger.

an 8.8 will have 10" rear drum brakes as well. a 7.5 can have either 9" or 10". the 10" drums are smooth with no cooling fins, the 9" has cooling fins on the drums.

This is only a 3.0 but hopefully it's the same anyway. I'm guessing the 3.0 would have lower gears than a 4.0 from the factory?
Was supposed to go look at it tonight but crap happened. Now it might not be until sat/sun. Poo...

My 93 has the 3.0l. single cab, short bed. Dana 35 front, originally 7.5" rear, both with 3.73 gears.

A 3.0 probably has the Hybrid D35, which still isn't a bad axle, it has all the heavier parts in the places that matter.

A 3.0L stickshift should have the D35. The 'hybrid' D28 I believe only appeared under some 3.0s having an auto trans.

OK, so after finding inner u joint gone, seized clutch master cyl and a bunch of other crap, I decided not to get the 96&94. Told the guy with the other 96 that I would see it on Saturday. No response . Asked the following Tuesday if it was still available, "yep" . Couldn't get directions etc so I said f him. Saw a 92 go up for 700 and as people are face booking him to part it out I showed up and offered 500. He took 600 and I drove it onto the ramp. 4l with a manual. Axle code says 3.55 gear, open diffs. 35 in front and says 8.8 rear (code 95) but it looks like a 7.5 to me. More later, gotta go.

If its a factory 4.0 then it should be the 8.8.

The only way itd have a 7.5 is if someone swapped the rear or it was originally a 2.9
