Product Test: 3M Headlight Restoration kit

Looks really nice. I got the exact same results in 20 minutes with a metal polishing product called autosol. its about 10 bucks a tube and a tube should last you years.

For the test drive this morning. The results were amazing. Before, there would be about a 10~25% difference between the low and high beam. Now they really light up the road. The low beams are a lot more focased on the road and not so scattered. With some improvement to the side lighting. High beams are wide and bright. Everything from left to right gets lit up. Even the hi/low bulb color temp is more noticeable. High beams are still there nice crystal white and low beams are of a lesser white. Probably a indacation that its time to change the bulbs out. And since I already changed to the SilverStar's when they first came out. Now would be a good time to switch to the SliverStar Ultra's as an upgrade.

I tried it, and had no luck. Unfortunately, I have no pics to prove it.

Basically, it made them a tiny bit smoother. But for all intents and purposes, they looked and worked no better than before.

When I got my BII a few months back, the headlights were the worst. Driving at night with the brights on was really the only way to get enough light to see, I never even got flashed by oncoming traffic because they were so fogged and yellowed.

Took both headlights out, heated the seal and removed the plastic lenses. Cleaned up the inside of the housing, the previous owner had done a lot of mudding so they had a ton of moisture and mold inside them.

After washing the lenses in soap and water I "wet sanded" them using chrome polish I had sitting in the garage with some 2000 grit sand paper. Spent about 10-15 minutes or so per side, and they turned out great.

Re-sealed the lens onto the housing with clear silicone and put it all back together. I was impressed with the results, they are 100% clearer and the low beams are brighter than before using the high beams. Mine were an extreme example though, they were horrible.

Are the lights still clear? I have been studying this market for a while now, and there are no lots of "liquids" out there that claim to be better than any sanding..

I polished the headlights on my Maxima and they were super clear for a while, but like you other guys - they hazed over after a couple of months. Maybe we should all chip in for the 55 gallon drum if it works!!

Hey I'll let you all in on a secret I learned after doing a few dozen cars with the "little" 3M kit. (Yes, 3M sells a larger professional kit that includes air tools) Take an old spray bottle and fill it with a little dish soap and water. Use it to keep the lense and sanding disks wet durring ALL stages of sanding. This will greatly decrese the "gumming" of the disks and possible burning of the plastic. Your sanding disks will last much longer too.

I just used the kit on my buddy's 2000 Focus and it cleared the lenses right up. Definitely gonna pick up a set and use it on my truck if I ever get some spare cash.
