possilbe EGR problems

my ranger (1999 2.5l 4cyl 5spd) ahs this noise and i'm thinking it's detonation. or something like that. it did it for 4 years before we rebuilt the motor and it still does it. my guess is that the EGR isn't working proerly and that's whats causing it. my next theory is that it's computer related. anotehr question is will a 97 computer work in a 99.

anyway tell me what you guys got.

if a video will help i'll gladly make one to show the noise.

the 97 ecu wont work on it.
98-00 will do.
and a vid would be good to help u figure this out

EGR will not cause denotation whether its working or not. You have another problem.

i don't know whether it's detonation or not. it's a knocking noise constantly in a freshly rebuilt motor.
