Thinking about switching to a 4.10 in my b2 on the 7.5 axle would it at all be possible to find a donor vehichle. I know nothing about axles so sorry if this comes as a stupid question, i just thought the $220 price tag was a bit steep to get one brand new. Plus one other question i heard from someone my b2 has LSD but ive tested it up on a jack spinning the tires; no engagement, ive heard LSD's tend to not work after so many miles, especially with no friction additive. Just went and looked it up i have a d4 axle code; 3.73 ratio would it be possible to just find a ranger or b2 with a d7 code and swap that ring and pinion out?

since you have no experience setting up gears, I would say in your case it would be much easier and less money to buy the whole axle and swap the axle out. there are a lot of steps and a few special tools that you need to set the gear backlash and spacing up, and if you do not do it right, you will wreck the gears very quickly. if you do go the route of gears only, I highly recommend you have a shop do it, which will cost you quite a bit more than 220 bucks.

you also have to get a matching set for your front axle as well or you will destroy your transfer case...

main point, if you regear it is going to cost you some bux.

Limited slip was rare on the very early RBV. Also, the clutch packs have to be extremely worn for it to operate like an open rear end. The more common symptom is noise and hopping while you turn at low speeds.

If you ever get to changing your gear oil turn the carrier so you can see the open face and take a pic, post it for us. Then we can tell you if it truly is a limited slip. (should have a big S-spring in the middle.

Ive been getting some hopping lately for sure often times the turn into my driveway spot at home is a complete 180 going pretty slow and it just seems like it wants to slide out from under me. Luckily my rear end has a slow leak( not even enough to drip just enough to keep it wet) so ill probaly do that and my electrical testing next chance i get .

I pulled a 7.5 rear end with 4.10 gears out of the local u-pull-it. swapped the gears, bearings, and shims straight into my ranger rear end no problem. I know I should have properly set it up but I was in a hurry and it worked just fine. 1 year and 30,000 miles later it still is going sweet!
