Please tell me about OHV 4.0 engines

... and was only ever put in trucks so it is built to do truck jobs.

Is this not the same 4.0 that is in the new v6 mustang...? Or is that a bigger cube version of the old mustang 3.8?

It was a SOHC though, not an OHV.

Wow, what's with all the hate on the SOHC? The OHV is a great reliable engine, but as an owner of both the OHV and SOHC, I like the SOHC MUCH better. Working on it isn't very hard, the timing chain issues have been ironed out, and it has tons more power than the OHV. And it is primarily a truck engine too. It was already in production for about 8 years before it was first put in a car.

No the havent. Ford just threw some half-assed band-aids on it and called it good.

I am really hoping the parents deside to trade their '02 Explorer rather than fix it, because I really don't want to learn how to put timing chains on a SOHC 4.0 :fie:

The old OHV it replaced was still silent at 180K (30k more than the SOHC is now and it didn't just start doing it yesterday)

The problem was the timing chain tensioners would break. Ford replaced them with better tensioners that do not break. Sounds like a proper fix to me. How is that a half-assed band-aid?

2002 was before Ford updated the tensioners. Like I said, the problems with the tensioners has been fixed since then. Sucks you didn't get a 2004+ one.

4.0 OHV is the perfect engine for a slightly modified Ranger IMO. I was leaning towards a 5.0 for a while, but I ended up just throwing a Comp Cam in the 4.0 and couldn't be happier with the results. I can still DD the truck on 35's with 4.10s. I can set the cruise at 75 mph on the freeway and still drop it in 4x4 and have plenty of power.

The MPGs of the 4.0 are not the most economical, but through all the tire and gearing changes, not to mention added weight, My fuel consumption has not gotten any worse.

I can pull 18 MPG if I'm easy on the skinny pedal. IMO thats damn good for a 4600lb truck on 35's.

I owned a Lima 2.3 2wd and it was gutless, but it was dependable and bullet proof. I currently have a 3.0 Ranger as well and I don't have anything positive to say about it.lol It was designed for a Fwd car, and thats where it belongs. 2.9's are just like the 4.0 IMO, lots of lowend torque just don't get them too hot.

I'll agree with "better tensioners", but not with "that do not break". I've seen dozens of '04+ with the same spray paint can rattle noise from the engine.

No, it sucks they didn't get a 4.6 one. :icon_thumby:

Rather it sucks they got one, the engine basically fits the rest of the car. If it was my first Ford it would have been my last. :annoyed:

I think they are a really nice looking SUV. But I don't know that I could own one. My buddy had a 2002 (with a 4.6), and had loads of suspension, brake, and transmission issues with it. I also see them in my other buddy's transmission shop all the time. The valve bodies are junk in the 5R55E/W/N/S's.

It is a nice car otherwise, rides/drives nice and everything.

The rear suspension and rear drivetrain is a POS though. This weekend I get to change the two front door switches (takes forever for it to time out and kick the lights off) rear end grease, rear wheel bearing and pinion seal. It has already had the driveshaft replaced once (the splined part wore out and it vibrated) and I wouldn't swear it doesn't need another. Both rear springs/struts have been replaced, three other unit wheel bearings and rear axleshaft seals. Sounds like it could have a ring gear noise too.

It is getting high on miles (150k) but it has been a constant battle all along. Sorry but when the old '94 had 180k on its entire powertrain and still didn't leak, vibrate or whine it kind of makes the replacement look bad.

Never had a problem with the tranny, actually I do like how it shifts... probably about the best part of the car actually. :D

My buddies lost the pump and converter at about 90,000. Then at a 100,000 the valve body took a dump. He replaced all of the bushings in the rear suspension, shocks, and bearings. Never could get rid of the squeak and thud sound on it. Too bad they didn't just put a solid 8.8 under it.

Same guy now has a 99 Cobra and is reliving the "noise nightmare" of the IRS. He also has an unidentified vibration as well. A brand new driveline didn't solve it.

This battered old truck is just gonna putt around town. I drove it to Toronto mostly for the heck of it . Except for spitting out a U-joint I had replaced earlier, the truck did fine. Prolly wont ever do that again. :D

One of my coworkers has a SOHC explorer and a SOHC Ranger...he drove the explorer with the loose chains until it finally just quit, then he put a low mileage engine in it, seems to me thats easier than doing the chains, engine has to come out anyway right? Only problem is he had to drive to a junkyard 2 hours away and wait in line to get one for $500, anywhere else they're hard to find and pricey.
