just about all the vulcan 3.0l are the same from 92 to now as long as it is a vulcan block
they can be found in more than ranger/explorers. they are also in the taurus
the year diffrences are 94 and older are dis/95 and newer are cam sync
they also changed the desing from a three pin to a two pin cam sensor in 98 this also means the synchronizing shaft and sync tool are different as well
if i can remember right one puts out an electric pulse and the other just blocks
it is important to make sure the special tool or have a nether motor to go off of to set the "timing" if you want to call it that. if you don't it will throw a code for a failure to enable misfire detention code.
oddly enough the sensor has nothing to do with firing the coil but rather the injucter timing
or at least thats on the 98 models

Although I haven't personally done it myself, if you'll do a search on the different Ranger boards you'll find a bunch of guys that have replaced their sensors without the special tool.

I did it without the tool and it turned out fine, the only thing the tool does is hold the key on the syncro in the center while you install it. Its not critical to have it you can just index the gear on the shaft so that it installs in the same position the old one came out. Mark the sensor with white out or a paint pen and then mark somewhere that you can see on the manifold or block line those marks up when you reinstall and everything is golden.

so have i, but it is a lot of trial and error if you don't remember the way it came out exactly

I took a picture of the exact spot mine was:) Camera phones rock. As long as the motor is at TDC on the compression stroke everything should go well.

i think most of the confusion comes from the fact that dorman sells the syncronizer and sensor together, so most people just assume its 1 unit and call it one name or the other? i believe the ford syncronizer is much higher quality than the dorman, but the the price is probably higher too (for a part as important as this though price shouldnt be an issue).
