I have a 96 ranger extended cab. Automatic, 4liter, swapped to milemarker manual hubs and electronic shift transfer case. I bought this used and it was missing the shift motor. I installed a shift motor and the flashing light went away. We are getting ready to see if the 4wd works now. When I was installing the motor i noticed a wire hanging from the transfer case. I was unable to ID it in my Haynes wiring diagram and alldata.

Electromagnetic clutch for shift-on-the-fly (engages for a couple seconds to spin the front driveline up to speed before the 4WD shift collar engages).

The case should work fine without it since you have manual hubs, although if you ever were to accidentally bump the dash control, shifting it into 4x4 with the hubs unlocked at speed, it'll start chattering quite loudly (possibly damaging things), and you won't be able to stop it for several seconds.

i always wondered what that wire was for...and why the heck ford didnt put a plug on it (so it gets cut whenever the shift motor is removed).

That wire on the '86-'94 motors is secured in the plug with a supposedly easily releasable pin (not sure if it's the same on '95up). I never had much luck getting them out though so I always just cut & soldered it also.

I just put in a new t-case in my 97 (electric shift 1354) the harness coming off the factory shift motor has the same color wire coming off of it and you should be able to splice it straight to the on you have hanging there with the butt splice on it, like the previous guy mentioned next to a yellow wire in the corner.
