Pinion Angle Correction

I wanted to use that the other day. I was too lazy to look up the code.

How did the rearend end up so high? That sounds like a Bronco II setup. It's what you would run if you have the double cardan joint at the transfer case end.

It started out at 5° which is the same as my stock 7.5. C5 trans was the same and all was right with the world.

Then I did the M5OD swap. The trans mount boss sits lower relative to the output shaft than the C5 which changed its angle flatter. It is a lot of rework to lower the trans new exhaust etc.

My springs were hosed and one shackle was seized so I went to belltech shackles and Explorer springs to get the ride height the same thinking it would help with axle wrap.

Between helping with spring wrap and making the angle worse yet it was kind of a wash... if I get the angle dialed in it will be better in the long run though.

I knew about the alt code... I just looked up how to do it on my phone.
°°°°

FYI... if you have a iPhone, hold down 0 and it will give the option of a degree symbol.

Well now that I know it bugs people... I don’t want to.

So 6* should be about right then?

Oh. I didn't know what the Belltech thing was. Aftermarket companies make rear shackle flip kits for the big trucks to give you lift with the stock leaf springs, and they do the same thing and foul your pinion angle. That is just a footnote in the instructions though, if you happen to notice it.

I knew about the risk before I even had them:

If you can't lower the back of the trans- which is what I'd recommend- you could try raising the engine by putting spacers or washers under the mount bolts. The angles at the front and rear of the driveshaft should be as close to equal as possible but if it started vibrating when one angle was increased I'd rather decrease it than make the opposite end more extreme.

Aye, but then I get into messing with the t-case mount and into engine fan/accessory clearance and all that good fun on the front. I really like how it sits in there.

And I changed the rear suspension which changed that angle from 5* to 8*. IMO once I get it dialed in my rear suspension without the factory lift blocks will be better than it was originally for spring wrap. Despite making the angle worse it did slightly improve the takeoff vibration... I wish I would have gopro'ed it before I did it so could compare.

'tis a complicated web I weave...

Your still killing me.

I spent about a year chasing vibrations in early Fairmonts, you'll feel great once you fix it. Change only 1 thing at a time and test drive often, you'll get there.

like the death wobble on the f250's we have......brand new 60 k deathwobble mobile.

That is almost funny... almost.

There for awhile wobbly trucks was plugging up the dealer my brother works at. They had like 6 late model low mile SD's that were not streetable and Ford had no parts available to throw at them.

i flipped the arms over....caster corrected too far ..very heavy steering. got me by.

fawking thing had 3 deg one side 2.x on the other.....

some drunken parts mixup somewhere...

They have had a bunch of alignment tweaks on them. "set them to this, maybe that, lets try this... heck just go make something up because that is all we are doing..."

Eventually they just started throwing aftermarket parts on them so people could have their trucks for harvest.

I haven't talked to him for awhile about it to know if they ever figured anything out.

the axles may have the mounts set wrong....who knows...

pretty sure we went to different arms on the others...

were they seeing a caster that was too light as well?

It was awhile ago, I don't remember. I know Ford kept revising the spec for the alignment. It was like they were throwing crap at the wall and seeing what they could get stick.

He kinda suspected at the time the new curved trackbar was flexing and letting the axle beat the ball joint on the trackbar and stabilizer into pieces. 50k mile cream puff trucks where limiping in driving like 500k beaters with wore out trackbar bushings and stabilizers.

There got to be a lot of new Rams in town after that...
