pinging 3.0

all plugs should be gapped. except on certain types of plugs that CANNOT be gapped, and its still not a badd idea to try to check them.
Beef

pinging is caused by the air fuel mixture exploding inside the chambers. knocking is generally caused by worn/spun bearings or other bottom end problems.

motorcraft/autolite plugs should be the only plugs that engine sees. aftermarket plugs can cause drivability concerns.

never trust the gap out of the box. even if it says "pre-gapped", ALWAYS double check. and dont run plugs that cant be gapped.

Try a set of Accel 516's plugs. They're a heat range or two colder than stock. The plugs, along with a 180 degree thermostat, completely cured the pinging in my truck.

If You are using a FRAM oil filter... change it immediately. Now You haven't mensioned the particulars of the event as in it is doing it all the time or just when it gets warmed up or if there is also a noise like pebbles in the exhaust pipe or what else.
Just wondering...

Oh!!! And if this condition is caused by the oil filter and now your engine goes bye bye... sue FRAM. They WILL honor their faulty oil filter (provided you have good legal representation).

98 3.0/ I had pinging only when the engine reached full operating temp, and at mid to upper RPM.
Cleaning the MAF cured it . I just took it out of the aluminum intake plenum and sprayed it with "MAF sensor cleaner"

Ok down here in the south we get one type of gas year round up north yall get 75% to 90% blend with a small amount of Ethanol in it to reduce emissions and keep the gas from gelling. Yall my need to "clean" or replace the O2 Sensors. i have NEVER had this prob in my 2000 3.0l even up north were i lived for a few years, and i run E85 down here were i can get it .85$ better then 2.35$ a gallon. i have had my plug wires go bad and it made popcorn, popping sound in the exhaust, and have other 3.0l in the shop do the same thing
