ping noise

Every so often when i start, let out the clutch i hear a ping sound. I thought it was a bad u-joint, but tonight i pulled the rear driveshaft and all the u-joints are tight. I am going to be taking a look in the rear diff, could it be excess backlash. Also i noticed some end play on the axles when the rear tires were pulled outwards. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Some end play in the axle shafts is normal as they are retained with c clips so there is some movement. Check the slip spline in your rear drive shaft aswell, pull it apart and grease it up well.

Mine used to do that, until I changed the fluid in the rear and added a quart of Lucas to it.
