Pilot bushing removal

Hey guys anyone here know if using grease to remove a pilot bushing really works? I heard it about 20 years ago but i have never tried it. Thanks for any imput.

I have done it several times. Sometimes it works and other times it doesn't. Obviously you are asking about it so you know how it works.

it works more often than not though . i have only had 2 that wouldn't come out that way.

But it's unnecessary for most RBVs, as the pilot bearing (not bushing) is in the flywheel. You just remove the flywheel and tap it out with a socket.

It's in the end of the crank on the engine i am working on.

I just resently pulled apart a 4.0l Ranger with tranny problems to find some genius put the pilot bearing in the crank. We used the Grease/spline liner trick the get the bearing out to install it in the flywheel. A failed bearing will probably not be removed this way. That is when a die grinder becomes handy.
Only the cologne engines have the pilot in the flywheel.
