Pics of spare tire location???

Thanks for photos, first time I've ever seen the tire pad. If you're gonna mount the spare there you'll probably have to take the bracket back off to get the thru bolt in place. I made one using a big square flat washer with jamb nuts on the back side of the all-thread so it could slide up & down in the slot but not turn. You got the retaining plate & wing nut?
Dang good lookin' '88.

I don't have any closeup pictures of the mount. In this picture, though, you can see the mount on the left, towards the front of the box. The hump (for lack of a better word) goes through the center of the wheel. There's a "screw" that goes through one of the lug holes in the rim, and screws into the bracket.

Here you see from outside the box the tire mounted in place.

Ya I got the stock bolt and got it in. But do not have the stock retaining Plate or wing nut. Just ran threw lug nut hole in wheel and put a nut on it. Kind of like the fold up bed rack not for the rack but just for tie down rail. Check it out on pic of truck.

There must be two different designs of inside bed spare holders. I've never seen the 'hump' piece, owner's manual doesn't show it, does it slide up & down in the slot to fit different size tires?

Interesting photo of 2wd Ranger w/o dual tanks but inside bed mounted spare. You can see the unused spare holder hanging under the bed.

That I don't know. I did notice that somebody posted a picture in this thread of a bedside spare tire holder without the hump. Mine had the hump. I don't know if it slid up and down.

I don't think the entire holder was there, though. Yes, I see the bar, but there's another piece that goes up to a piece of the frame (on my '90), and I don't see that piece on the '85.

The part I'm calling the hump shows in 90RangerinSK's photo from the rear of the truck inside the bed with the camper top (above), it sticks out from the vertical bracket. The pad mounts to the floor & I can see in Wilcox's photos it's not adjustable. Surely the hump moves up & down to accommodate different size spares.
90RangerinSK - do you think your mount hardware is factory?

that carrier in 1990 SK 's truck looks exactly like the under bed carrier part for 83 through 97 Ranger's spare mount. Maybe someone adapted it to the inside of the bed. I thought about doing that for my truck since the 31" tire does not fit in the under bed carrier. but it also does not fit in the bed between the fender well and front or back of the bed either.... so it is looking more and more like adapting a B2 type carrier

Interesting................bet someone did modify an under-bed spare carrier for use on the inside of the bed. Perhaps someone will read this thread who has all the original stuff & will take time to educate us.

I no longer have the truck. However, I took a closer look at the photo I posted, and I noticed a few things:
  • The front wall of the bed is painted the same colour as the outside of the bed (and cab).
  • The inside of the bed is a different colour (can't tell, but maybe the original colour?)
  • The spare tire carrier is painted to match the side of the bed.
I'm going to guess that it was on the truck before it was painted. Since it seems to match the factory colour scheme, I would guess that it came from the factory like that.

No, it's not adjustable. It's mounted where it is mounted.

I tried Mr. Google, but he was entirely unhelpful. I found @85_Ranger4x4's truck (Hello, Justin!). I found @racsan's photo that he posted here over on the other Ranger forum. And a whole bunch of irrelevant stuff.

I'll send a message to my local Ford dealer and see what they can find out for me. They're pretty good.

Ive always mounted my spare in the bed, Ive never had a twin-tank ranger but living in the salt belt I know that often things seize up, add a receiver hitch and its more difficult to get to that back bolt. There was a bracket kit you could buy through jc whitney (or somewhere else, not sure) but its just as easy to put a small u-bolt in the side rail & add a J-bolt. I run 2 different tire sizes based on what time of the year it is and swap out the spare for the same size, even though its not a huge difference between a 225/70 & 235/75 tire (15”). Otherwise I would probably never check the air pressure in the spare.
