Phantom Starting, need a real master.

My truck is doing something similar. I can try to start it and it will just crank for several seconds before actually firing. I've even tried cycling the key on again and again. It is totally random when it decides to start, or just crank for 5 or more seconds.

I'm beginning to think it's the fuel pump for me too. It was replaced last year before I bought it. The guy who I bought it from even had the receipt from two days beforehand.

Anyone know how I can check the fuel pump itself? I can easily take my bed off and check it out once I know what to do.

Edit: I have been checking my fuel rail pressure for the past six months or so... I used to have all kinds of codes showing up and I had 28 psi with the key on, engine off. When I started the truck, I would be around 20-22 psi.

My Chilton manual says that I need to be between 40-45 psi with the key on, engine off...

Could that be the fuel pump as well? I've replaced the fuel pressure regulator, fuel filter (in the frame rail), changed and cleaned the injectors, and checked all my lines for kinks... but I'm still running that 20-22 psi...

It is possible there was dirt\trash in the bottom of the tank or the pump just went bad. These things do happen. I bought a water pump once for another vehicle and it was bad from the box, lifetime warranty on it as well.

Look in the Chilton book, it should show wich connection is power\ground and sending unit. apply direct power to the power side and ground to ground, pump should kick on. Check the connection at the fuel pump to see if it is corroded, as well. If it does not kick on with direct power, then it is definately dead.
