Pertronix Flamethrower distributor

No one cares about cores, those go to the factory anyway. But read my post above about how garbage parts end up on the shelves.

I personally haven't had that happen at a parts store.

Did have some aftermarket bushings that would fit neither the aftermarket shaft or a John Deere shaft. Ended up going with deere bushings (like an extra $500) just to get it done. Returned the problem bushings and told the rep about it, they measured to their spec fine and they couldn't see anything wrong. Charged us a restocking fee (after it delayed a project a week) and put them back in stock.

Dad used to work for a JD dealer, when they sold out int he 80's the owner borrowed a box stapler from his friend that owned a factory in town and returned all their cores he had saved as they were working out the sale of the dealer to Deere in new part boxes. For years after that when the dealer that bought them out ordered parts they would occasionally receive old bad parts (starters, alternators etc) in "factory" sealed boxes.

I've talked to a knowledgeable tech guy at Summit and called Pertronix tech number at his suggestion. I was apparently taking to a salesman before. This guy was able to look at the test report and told me the advance worked properly at several different RPMs, they didn't monitor the advance as they raised the RPMs so the test was worthless. I had to explain how I checked the advance because the "tech" didn't understand why the delay was a problem.
I found a new Duraspark distributor and will probably order one, a steel gear, a Motorcraft module and a Painless Duraspark harness. MSD has a $514 distributor but it has GM looking centrifugal advance like Pertronix uses. If you don't mind waiting 8 seconds for the centrifugal advance to begin to come in, and 14 seconds for it to return to base timing at idle, Pertronix has a distributor for you.

That is pretty disappointing of Pertronix and their tech guy... I bought hundreds of points conversions kits from them back in the day. The only time I had issues with the is if they got hooked up backwards.

I tried to fill out the online return form and I'm beyond the time limit. I called Summit, explained what the distributor was doing and why I was so late trying to exchange it and they agreed to take it back and credit me. I've had very few complaints with parts from Summit and they've always taken care of the problem with no argument at all. Summit gets 5 stars, I gave Pertronix one star because zero wasn't a choice. I hope Pertronix spends my money well because they'll never get another dime. I'll also broadcast my experience to everyone at next summer's cruise nights and car shows.

Ive had good service from summit too, I wasnt even going to return a defective tach Id bought , happened to complain about it in the product reveiw I had wrote and they sent me return labels, no questions asked. I hadnt even kept the original shipping box or paperwork.

I started the truck today with the Duraspark ignition, centrifugal advance starts as soon as the RPMs increase and it drops to base timing instantly when returned to idle. The new Napa distributor, Motorcraft module, Mallory steel gear, and wiring connectors I needed to build the harness were way cheaper than the shiny Pertonix turd.
