all I know is that you need to think of your engine as an air pump.
you can get a larger throttle body, which is the most restrictive on a 2.9, then port match all your runners (use a gasget to do this) then port match your intake ports on the heads (gasket again) then do a 3 angle valve job, and port match your exhaust ports...
the reason so many people don't get the feel they expect from the 2.9 is most likely 'cause the throttle body is so damn small that the exhaust flow increase will only go as far as that most restrictive point.
I'm rambling, .
the last part is the only good advise.
a 2.9l is not your average engine with low effiencey,it makes very good hp per cube compared to other engines and is hard to improve on without losing all its bottom end power or boosting.thats why people notice close to zilch especially in a 4x4,because a lot of mods lose torque in exchange for a smaller hp gain up in the rice zone.you'd get more acceleration gain from junk yard 4.10's and the whole drivetrain would thank you.
i've had it all, without getting new heads and a revving cam .including a larger throttle body that made throttle WAY to touchy and wasn't needed except right at redline(debateable even then).
i killed the 2.9l i had thousands in go fast crap on and swapped in a stock 4.0l that has low compression in all cylinders and smokes.... and what do you know it has what feels like TWICE the power and can pull hills in one or two gears higher at half the rpm's.with slightly better all around mileage
for the money you put in vrs. the output its not worth doing anything but keeping her maintained and getting good mileage so she'll sing for years to come.unless you come by the speed parts cheap or free.what you really need are lower gears if you want more pep.
you don't open the hood enough to make looking at the headers a benefit, just get some 4.10's,mudders,a winch, rims, lift, stereo, paint job,or any other great mod you'll enjoy much more and at about the same cost as decent headers
BUT if i already had headers of course i'de put them on,you will hear the exhaust pulses go through each tube when the hoods open even if it doesn't change the tone much(don't punch out you cat i found out it robs power if its not clogged, don't ask me how i know)
