P/S Cooler

yeah ive seen eom on boosted engines
the other thay i saw a mitsubishi diesel engine and it had a small oil cooler, thats why i ask about them, it would be good to have one on the Ranger, with the climate conditions down here

it can be done.

i would like to do one to my truck, can u pm me how to when u have some free time? i bet u have some PIIHB to do lol

this is a good mod..... I would do the saginaw swap at the same time and put a filter on it.

I'm gonna get a good inline filter this time to grab any crap that might be in there, but I'm gonna save the saginaw pump for the 4.0. It's getting a new gearbox at the same time as the engine.

Easy mod.
Get a new high pressure line and replace it accordingly.
Using fuel line or similar pressure hose(not vacuum hose), plumb from the return side of the box to a barbed fitting on the lower trans cooler fitting, using another barbed fitting from the upper trans cooler fitting, run another hose to the bottom of the PS reservoir on the pump. Don't forget to use hose clamps, they are needed even though it is the low pressure hose.

Since your somewhat there, you might also consider the Saginaw pump swap for the ultimate steering set-up.(there's a write-up in the tech library)

You want to install the power steering cooler inline with the P/S RETURN line on the low pressure side of the power steering system.

The high pressure side of the power steering operates at around three times the burst pressure of the cooler.

It's a lot easier to do if you start with the upper trans cooler line (robbed off a junkyard truck)

Why? if nothing else it gets more fluid in circulation.

Thanks for all the input guys.

I already knew I needed to have the cooler on the low side because of the high pressures. I also suspect that having that much more fluid capacity on the high side might negatively effect P/S performance.

I'll definitely look into getting that trans line from the JY.

I would use a spin on filter ...... like the FS2000 transmission filter or something similar......

can you filter transmission fluid/power steering fluid with a motor oil filter?

Yep, Fram PH8A filters (standard filter for 302) will filter up to 5 microns IIRC
