overheathing amp.

Hey guys. A buddy of mine has problems with his subs. If he plays them to loud for more than about half an hour they stop playing. When this happens, his amp is about to melt because it is so hot. The amp is in his trunk with his 2 subs. MTX class d amp. I've seen alot of ppl with the amp in the trunk without overheathing problems. What causes this? I think he has 8 gage now. Would upgrading to bigger gage help? Thanks for your normal cooperation.

if its over heating is the ohm impedance right?

What kind of amp, make sure the impedance of the subs wiring is going to be stable ont he amp.. also if you have the amp bridged its seeing a lower load which is making it work harder. Say you have it bridged at 4 ohm, the amp is seeing a 2 ohm load.. if the am p is bridged at 2 ohm.. its seeing a 1 ohm load.

check for proper impedance at the amp. also check voltage at the amp while the music is blasting to insure the amp is receiving adequate voltage.

if everything checks out....buy a 12 volt computer case cooling fan and affix it to the heat sink on the amp.

maybe the gains arent set correctly. you can download test tones for free at http://www.realmofexcursion.com/downloads.html and then use a dmm to check the voltage at the amp
